In Memoriam: Arturo Gatti (1972-2009)

Former world boxing champion Arturo “Thunder” Gatti was found dead Saturday in his hotel room by his wife at the Brazilian seaside resort of Porto de Galihnas. He was 37 years old. The couple had gone to Brazil for a second honeymoon, bringing with them their 10-month-old son. It is still unclear exactly how Gatti died, although police investigator Edilson said, “It is still too early to say anything concrete, although it is all very strange.”

Although he was never one of the game’s elite fighters, Gatti (40-9, 31 KO) was undoubtedly one of its most entertaining and his heart and determination made him of the sport’s most admired boxers. On four separate occasions, he engaged in bouts recognized by Ring Magazine as the “fight of the year.” His still-hard-to-comprehend trilogy versus Micky Ward sealed both of their places in boxing lore, with the first and third bouts widely recognized as two of the most memorable in modern boxing history.

After a brutal loss by TKO to Floyd Mayweather in the fall of 2005, Gatti was never the same. Unable to avoid the punches at his advanced age, Gatti fell by TKO to former “The Contender” contestant Alfonso Gomez in the summer of 2007 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, the venue where he attracted throngs of supporters and the site of his last nine fights. Having lost three out of his last four bouts in devastating fashion, this was his last fight as he announced his retirement in the post-fight interview.

He was a true warrior in every sense of the word and will always be fondly remembered for bringing the same intensity, no matter the odds. May he forever rest in peace.

UPDATE: Gatti’s wife, Amanda Rodrigues, has been detained by Brazilian authorities as a suspect in the case after contradictions in her interrogation. Milena Saraiva, a spokeswoman for the Pernambuco state civil police, said authorities were preparing to present a formal accusation against Rodrigues, who denied being involved in her husband’s death.
