Sorry For Yelling: Steve Slaton

Sorry for the infrequent updates, been under the weather the last week or so, and the news that Texans RB Steve Slaton would miss the rest of the season with a shoulder/neck injury was almost enough to make me toss my cookies.

Why?

Well, I drafted that bama with the fourth overall pick in my fantasy football draft. Ahead of everybody sans Drew Brees, Adrian Peterson and Maurice Jones-Drew. Yup, ahead of Chris Johnson. Ahead of Michael Turner. Ahead of Peyton. The list goes on and on. I sent out smokescreens all summer about being interested in Johnson, MJD and even Matt Forte, all under the guise of scooping Slaton. I actually pleaded with MBJ not to write a possible “Fantasy Equations” article about Slaton’s prospects this season because I was afraid someone in the True Grit would read it and bump Slaton up their draft board. I even bet a dude at work that Slaton would a) lead the AFC in rushing and b) run for 1,600 yards easy this season.

I won’t go deep into my reasoning for making such claims, but I will say that it had a lot do with his workload last season, the fact that Andre Johnson is on his team and visions of what I saw him do in college. In short, I was a fan and loved his situation in Houston.

Well, sorry for yelling.

After a stellar rookie season, Slaton didn’t even manage 1,000 yards total offense, never ran for more than 76 yards in a game, averaged a putrid 3.3 ypc and developed a fumbling problem – seven on the season – that caused him to get benched in the Texans’ Week 8 win over the Bills after committing an unforced fumble on his third touch of the game. OnĀ  top of all of this, he was still the Texans best running back, yet head coach Gary Kubiak – who will rightfully be gone after this season – chose to give slow ass Chris Brown the rock in key situations throughout the season and most upsetting of all, chose to give him the rock near the goal-line, which is actually beyond upsetting and more along the lines of, “Don’t let me catch Gary Kubiak’s ass in the streets.”

With that said, I’m entering this week’s slate of games with a 9-4 record, thanks in part to a good schedule and a little help from Andre Johnson, Antonio Gates and Ben Roethlisberger. I have to win my game, and need ‘We Ready’ to lose in order for me to advance to the playoffs. However, I could have wrapped this thing up a long time ago if I would’ve drafted the diabolical Chris Johnson and all of that talent and speed ahead of going on a hunch and taking Slaton.

Again, sorry for yelling.
